finally have some time to work on some labs today.  I don’t go into work until later for an IP cut over this evening, so I’m taking a bit of time to work on labs and study this morning.  This is truly the first time I’ve really had to sit down and work through labs on my home gear.  I’m starting at the beginning of my BSCI study guides and working all the way through.  I figure I can read the chapters and take notes during downtimes at work and in the evenings.

I’m trying to figure out how to enable trunking on my 2500 AS so that I can put it on the backbone network for the lab environment, but still have it IP’d on my home network for remote access.  Either my google/cisco-fu sucks, or it can’t be done with this router.  If it can’t be, I guess I can use one of the spare 2610’s sitting off to the side to do the trunking and setup a NAT to the box.

new rack for the gear

I’ve been using a 12U two post stand for my gear.  I outgrew that rack in a hurry and since then, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my gear.  In my last post, I mentioned the list of equipment I have.

Well, yesterday morning, I found a full sized 4 post rack for sale locally for $50.  I jumped all over it and now have a place to put all my gear.  I was so excited about it, I couldn’t contain myself last night.  I got home and my daughter was asleep in the living room.  I’ll end up installing some of my gear tonight.

the home lab

For a CCNP candidate, I have a decent home lab.  Unfortunately, I don’t have the room in my apartment for any of the equipment, nor do I have a rack to put it all in.  I’ve been accumulating more hardware lately, including a pair of 3550’s, a 2511AS, WIC-1T cards and serial cables, and an OLD OLD OLD 4500 router to use as a frame switch.  The majority of my lab gear is still at that friend’s house as studying has been the last thing on my mind this last month.

My wife’s back at work part time, so I figured I’d take some time, today, to get the frame sw and the access server setup.

My current hardware list is:

3550 PoE

2620XM (r4)
2651XM (r3)
2801 (r2)
2811 (r1)
4500 (fr sw)
2620 (bbr1)
2620 (bbr2)

Both of our digital cameras were stolen in the break in last month so I can’t get any updated pics of the setup just yet.

edit:  updated true hardware list.

studies have been on hold

I started this blog in early december hoping to post more frequently.  I don’t want to use this for any personal business, but the month of december was a pretty crappy one.  Needless to say, studies have been put on hold for a while.

A good friend lost his 3 month old son to  SIDs the week I created this blog.  With my daughter being just 15 months old, it really hit home.

December 19th, my home was broken into and robbed while my family was home.  We didn’t hear the intruders until they came into the master bedroom.  Needless to say, that has taken up much of my focus over the last few weeks.
